Enmeduranki

The below excerpt is one of the oldest texts related to Enoch. Enmeduranki was given the golden tablets or "book of life" and knew the mysteries of the gods.

1. ...] his (Marduk’s) might over the universe for ever,
2. ...] .. it is good to spread abroad his . [..] that is may be praised.
3. ...] it is in his power [to throw down] and to build again, the peoples bow down and are shown how to watch for his sign.
4. [Of] the king of [Babylon], who supervises all cult-centers and confirms the regular offerings,
5. He (Marduk) has magnified [his ...], extolled his power and made him supreme,
6. He has magnified [his ...] and exalted his destined greatness.
7. [....], king of Babylon, who supervises all cult-enters and confirms the regular offerings, am I,
8. Distant scion of kingship, seed preserved from before the flood,
9. Offspring of [Enmeduranki], king of Sippar, who set up the pure bowl and held the cedar wood (rod),
10. Who sat in the presence of Šamaš and Adad, the divine adjudicators,
11. Foremost son, [....], king of justice, reliable shepherd, who keeps the land’s foundations secure,
12. ... of Adad and Gula, the great gods, progeny from of old,
13. First attendant of Suzianna, twin sister of Ansar,
14. Called by Anu and Dagan, chosen by the great gods:
15. At that time, in the reign of a previous king, conditions changed.
16. Good departed and evil was regular.
17. The lord became angry and got furious,
18. He gave the command and the gods of the land abandoned it [...] its peoples were incited to commit crime.
19. The guardians of peace became furious and went up to the dome of heaven, the spirit of justice stood aside.
20. ..., who guards living beings, prostrated the peoples, they all became like those who have no god,
21. Evil demons filled the land, the namtar-demon . [...] ..., they penetrated the cult-centers.
22. The land diminished, its fortunes changed.
23. The wicked Elamite, who did not hold (the land’s) treasures in esteem, [...] his battle, his attack was swift,
24. He devastated the habitations and made them into a ruin, he carried off the gods, he ruined the shrines.
25. Marduk, king of the gods, who decrees destinies, [...] the lands, observed everything.
26. When the lord is angry, the Igigi in heaven cannot suffer his fury,
27. His terror is fearful, at his glance none can stand.
28. The earth did not support his foot-step nor ..... [..], at his roaring the seas trembled,
29. The rocks did not sustain the placing of his foot, the gods of the universe bowed down to him.
30. Things of every kind that exist .. [...] in his hand, [when] he has become angry who can appease him?
31. ...]/ who learnt [....]. him and sees his skill
32. ...]. himself [...] the Enlil of the gods, the wise,
33. ...] the Igigi [...] the prince, the counsellor,
34. ...] who, in .[....] adorned with splendor, seated in fearfulness,

3. Šamaš in Ebabbarra [appointed]
1. Enmeduranki [king of Sippar],
2. The beloved of Anu, Enlil [and Ea].
4. Šamaš and Adad [brought him in] to their assembly,

6. Šamaš and Adad [set him] on a large throne of gold,
7. They showed him how to observe oil on water, a mystery of Anu, [Enlil and Ea],
8. They gave him the tablet of the gods, the liver, a secret of heaven and [underworld],
9. They put in his hand the cedar-(rod), beloved of the great gods.

11. The men of Nippur, Sippar and Babylon into his presence,

24. Who set up the pure bowl and held the cedar-(rod),
25. A benediction priest of the king, a long-haired priest of Šamaš,
26. As fashioned by Ninhursagga,
27. Begotten by a nisakku-priest of pure descent:
28. If he is without blemish in body and limbs
29. He may approach the presence of Šamaš and Adad where liver inspection and oracle (take place).
